A man with one leg was caught after heisting cars from rental companies in the Philadelphia International Airport. The Philadelphia man, 44-year-old Benjamin Copeland, is without a right leg and still managed to steal five rental cars in under a month. He stole the cars from the Budget and Avis rental car lots which was shocking to police.
Police say the crime would be difficult for anyone to commit and cannot fathom how a man missing a leg was able to steal cars repeatedly without getting caught. Police say stealing cars right off the lot is not an easy task because it is under surveillance and have security all around.
Copeland uses crutches for his disability and missing his right leg must have made driving difficult when operating the gas pedal. Copeland was able to find a way around this. Copeland would ride the rental company’s shuttle bus that took him to the lot. He figured out that if he hit a button inside the shuttle, the exit gate at the end of the lot would go up. He then got into a rental SUV, where the keys were inside, and drove out the exit.
Whenever an SUV would run out of gas, Copeland would leave the vehicle where it was because he could not afford the gas. This made it easy for the police to find the vehicles reported stolen. One of the stolen cars was parked in front of Copeland’s home. When he went to get into the vehicle, Police arrested him outside his home on June 5th. He confessed and told police where they could find the other stolen cars.
Copeland is well-known by Philadelphia police due to his 17 prior arrests for crimes such as robbery, assault and narcotics.
