Personally I could give a shit about the 3G part of the new iPhone (they probably won’t even have that shit up here in Bumblefuck,CA), I’m just feeling the $199 price tag, and feeling getting rid of my clunky ass 10-pound Audiovox Pocket PC and getting into the Mac world of phones, since I run a Mac at home and a Mac at work. Not really feeling having to switch from Verizon, who have been badass for the last 10 years to AT&T but whatever, they’re all the same shit anyway.

Since 2004, a team of professors and students from the University of California, Berkeley has searched for ways to let a single human supervise a team of robot planes. Now, this Center for Collaborative Control of Unmanned Vehicles has a new device for ordering around its drones: an iPhone.

In a video taken from this month’s Teaching & Technology conference, the Berkeley crew uses an iPhone to pick tasks for its drone squadron, input a set of coordinates for a local reconnaissance mission, and send the planes new orders while the aircraft are in the sky.

But don’t tell Steve Jobs how the Berkeley folks are using his gadget. According to the terms of the Apple Software Developer Kit agreement, “applications may not be designed or marketed for real-time route guidance; automatic or autonomous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life-saving purposes.”

In a totally <sarcasm>surprising</sarcasm> move Apple honcho Steve Jobs announced the new iPhone today in San Francisco during his keynote speech at the World Wide Developers Conference. Among the other features will be built-in GPS, 3G data network access and, best of all, a lower price: $199 for the 8gb, $299 for the 16gb.

Techies and Apple addicts everywhere are going to have to keep on waiting for the highly anticipated iPhone 2.0 firmware. Apple announced that they will be pushing back the release of the update from June to early July. At a glance of the new features, it looks like Apple is really pushing forward to seam together the worlds computers and cell phone technology. Highlights include full support for Microsoft Office documents (including Powerpoint) and expanded features in Mail.

Apple will delay the release of the iPhone 2.0 software until early July. But when the firmware does ship, it will offer plenty of new features for iPhone and iPod touch users.

Apple announced the new release date for the iPhone 2.0 update as part of a demonstration of the software during Steve Jobs’ Worldwide Developers Conference keynote presentation on Monday. Originally, Apple had expected to release iPhone 2.0 in late June.

When it does ship, the software will introduce a host of new features. The iPhone will add a contact search that allows users to enter a name and instantly find who they’re looking for. Full iWork document support lets users view Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents. Apple also will offer full support for Microsoft Office documents, including PowerPoint presentations.

iPhone 2.0 adds much sought-after bulk delete and move capabilities to its Mail application. Mail users will be able to save images from e-mails into their Photo Library.

Apple will also add parental control features, allowing parents to turn off explicit content, YouTube, iTunes Store, and the forthcoming App Store.

As announced when Apple first unveiled its iPhone 2.0 plans in March, the software update is free for iPhone users. iPod touch users can update to the firmware for $9.99.

In addition to outlining iPhone 2.0 features, Apple executives also profiled the iPhone software development kit that allows developers to build native apps for the phone. In a 33-minute demonstration during Monday’s keynote, a steady stream of developers showed off the games and apps that will be available via the App Store later this summer. Companies demonstrating their wares included Sega, Loopt, Pangea Software, TypePad, Cow Music, and Modality.

“We think we have a fantastic platform here for people to build incredible applications,” said Scott Forstall, Apple senior vice president of iPhone software.

Jobs also spoke about the enterprise features in the iPhone 2.0 update, highlighting many of the capabilities first showcased at his March demo. New enterprise features will include push e-mail, push contacts, push calendars auto-discovery of Microsoft Exchange servers.

I cannot wait. I’m going to get my hands on one of those new puppies asap. I’m not the only one, either. Several people in this office have been complaining about their phones sucking lately, enough to make me suspicious of Apple for some kind of iPhone conspiracy. Maybe Steve Jobs hired some secret team of geniuses to hack the mobile signals from the satellites or some shit because everyone’s phones here keep randomly shutting off. I, myself, have been without a working cell phone for like 5 days now because my charger has mysteriously disappeared. Damn gnomes.

I’m not even going to buy a new charger. I’m re-virginizing myself until the day I get my iPhone and we spend our first night together, touching buttons and exploring all its bells and whistles. Damn, I just checked and I guess it’s not going to be available until July 11th. Wahhh!!!!!!!!

Google just did a demo of their HTC Dream phone that has long been a rumor. It’s got a super cool navigation feature that you can check out in the video, and a touch screen, but it’s still got buttons (sliding keyboard) and lacks a bunch of other features that still make it the iPhone’s bitch.
