Radiohead+Lasers=AWESOME

Earlier Alisse posted Beck’s new video. Well, not to be outdone, I’ve decided to putt the infamous In Rainbows card and bring you Radiohead’s newest release ‘House of Cards’. The video was shot with lasers, because apparently you can do that. I’m a firm believer that Thom Yorke has invented all viral marketing campaigns and all relevant new technology in the last 20 years, but that’s just me.

The video for Radiohead’s “House of Cards,” made without the use of conventional cameras, finally debuted today. Zoo Films, who directed the clip, used two different camera-less technologies to create the video. If you ask us, the whole thing looks like The Lawnmower ManRoboCop 2, but it’s still pretty cool. To make matters even cooler, the band will make all the data compiled to create the images available to fans, allowing Radiohead die-hards who know how to manipulate such information to make their own versions of the In Rainbows song. “I always like the idea of using technology in a way that it wasn’t meant to be used, the struggle to get your head round what you can do with it. I liked the idea of making a video of human beings and real life and time without using any cameras, just lasers, so there are just mathematical points — and how strangely emotional it ended up being,” Thom Yorke said.

  • Girl Talk, The Next Radiohead?

Nah, I wouldn’t go that far… but Girl Talk is releasing their (his?) new album, Feed The Animalsin a ‘pay what it’s worth’ fashion. With the success of ‘In Rainbows and Girl Talk’s increasing popularity, I think the disk is going to blow up.

Girl Talk fans should keep their eyes on the Internet over the next few weeks, as it will be the only place to obtain his new album in the short term.

Girl Talk mainman Greg Gillis tells Billboard.com he will release “Feed the Animals,” a 55-minute album featuring more than 300 samples, in a pay-what-you want format a la Radiohead’s “In Rainbows” via his label Illegal Art’s Web site. A physical CD will available sometime in the next few months.

“This project has always been about embracing pop,” Gillis says. “I feel like the source material on this record has more in-your-face classics. Because of that, it’s more over the top.”

Gillis says “Feed the Animals” has been developed around his live set, something that’s been ever evolving over the last two years. “For the final editing process, I probably worked eight hours a day, Monday through Friday, for about 3 months,” he reports. “I worked very hard to make it sound like I didn’t work hard.”

In comparison to 2006’s acclaimed “Night Ripper,” Gillis describes “Feed the Animals” as being “smoother” while experimenting with tempos: “There are parts with edits more detailed than anything on ‘Night Ripper,’ but overall, I spent time focusing on a particular source song for longer periods of time, rather than jumping from song source to song source as quickly as possible.”

Currently, a fall tour is in the works, but Girl Talk will play sporadic headlining shows this summer, along with scheduled appearances at Seattle’s Capitol Hill Block Party in July, as well as the Lollapalooza and All Points West festivals.

    Boy Talk?

  • A Gift From Radiohead: Scotch Mist

Hey look, it’s Radiohead playing all the songs of In Rainbows, live in the studio.

…yeah, it’s their New Year’s gift, but it is also an advertisement to buy the non-MP3, hard copy version their new album, In Rainbows. You can do so here.

  • I Love it When You Give Me Radiohead

    art shit
It was announced last week that Radiohead have signed with British label XL Recordings for the UK distribution of their new album In Rainbows. The special In Rainbows box edition will be available December 3rd.

In anticipation of the hard-release of In Rainbows, their old label Parlophone is issuing a 7-disc boxed set of their previously released albums (including Pablo Honey (1993), The Bends (1995), Ok Computer (1997), Kid A (2000), Amnesiac (2001), Hail to the Thief (2003) and their live album I Might Be Wrong (2001)). That’s cool and all I guess (if you are missing more than one or two pieces of their catalog). If you’re a real n3rd you’ll be purchasing all of that on their 4GB USB stick (which will be shaped like their freaky-eyed bear image). The stick will be released alongside the CD box set on December 10th. You can pre-order that shit here.

  • Dear Radiohead,

    Dear Radiohead,

Congratulations on the forthcoming release of your new, highly anticipated album, In Rainbows. But I have a minor bone to pick with you. The reason why I took a job as a music journalist was to get free CDs - it certainly isn’t for the money. I know you’re, what, the biggest, most critically praised band in the world, and I know you also have your reservations about both your fans and your role as the preeminent experimental rock band of this generation, but your decision not so send out advance promo CDs of In Rainbows is very disappointing to me. I got a message from your publicist saying “There will be no advances, promotional copies, digital streams, media sites, etc. of RADIOHEAD’s In Rainbows.” What, do you think you don’t need me anymore? That you will sell a gillion copies of your new album with neither help from a record company nor press hype? That despite not giving us advance records to hear, that we’ll still write endlessly about your group’s brilliance? Well…yes, I suppose we will do that in any case because we are like, BFF, but that does not mitigate my extreme displeasure of being relegated to join the unwashed, greasy-haired masses waiting for their copies of the special box set or digital download ordered from your special album site.

Either way, while I’m pissed I don’t yet have a copy, I still like you and can barely wait until October 10th to hear your album. And that bit about how you’re saying fuck you to the Record Industry and charging people whatever they want to pay for it is pretty cool of you as well.

PS - I lost my pirated copy of The Bends while on tour - we gave it to the sound guy in Vancouver so he’d have something to play over the house PA besides terrible, terrible thrash metal. Would you mind sending that to me again? Thanx
