As was the case when a video of a US Marine throwing a puppy off a cliff in Iraq sparked widespread outrage, death threats and maudlin displays of outrage across the internet, the news that Costa Rican artist Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas had starved a dog named Nativity to death as part of an art exhibit has been making the rounds on Myspace bulletins and well over a million people have signed internet petitions calling for his banishment to the Chateau D’iff of the art world. First off, the story is almost certainly just another performance art hoax, like the recent Yale abortion art. But even if it were real, the whole point of Vargas’ as he himself explained was to “illustrate the point that…in my home city of San Jose, Costa Rica, tens of thousands of stray dogs starve and die of illness each year in the streets and no one pays them a second thought. Now, if you publicly display one of these starving creatures, such as the case with Nativity, it creates a backlash that brings out a big of hypocrisy in all of us. Nativity was a very sick creature and would have died in the streets anyway.”  If illustrating the lazy hypocrisy of so-called “animal lovers” was the goal of the installation, I’d say Vargas succeeded in spades. All the people signing these petitions and expending their energy making Guillermo “Habacuc” Vargas a famous performance artist in the name of “animal welfare” should take a good long look in the mirror and realize that millions of cats and dogs are euthanized in this country each year for no other reason than people don’t care enough about them to pay for them to live. Likewise, many millions more are tortured to death every single day to provide our cheap, overly meat-laden diets and yet most people do nothing. I guess its a lot easier to sign some fucking stupid petition than to actually do anything real to back up your supposed convictions. Great job everyone! Way to make a difference. OBAMA ‘08!

Seriously. Having to sit here all day and approve comments on the David Mortari post (of which there are almost 100) is making me feel physically ill. Shit like:

Like I said yesterday, funny that all these fucking people are coming out of the woodwork in defense of dogs, when millions of them each year are euthanized right here in our country for reason other than apathy and laziness. How about the thousands of other dogs used each year for Animal Testing for companies such as Iams? Or how about the dozens of countries who eat dogs as meat?

1. Go to the Humane Society and adopt all the dogs, who will otherwise be euthanized.
2. Go Vegetarian immediately.
3. Vote Democrat.

Well, the person responsible for leaking the conversation, his son Tucker Chapman has gotten himself into hot water as well by violating his parole.

The alleged violations include drug use, association with a felon, failing to inform the parole officer that he had contact with a police officer and failure to follow the police officer’s instructions…

Speaking of, Duane Dog has reportedly resumed filming episodes for the next season of his show, though A&E has yet to announce the air-dates for his return. They must be waiting for the nation to forget about his tirade and the pig-eyed idiocy squirming under the slim greasy surface of his mullet. Shithead.

Here is a bit of completely inane and completely meaningless news that seems to be capturing the hearts and minds of women over thirty across the world: Some bitches took Ellen DeGeneres’s dog! DeGeneres had given the dog to her hairdresser, because her cats weren’t taking well to its presence, which violated the terms of the adoption that she agreed to when getting the dog from a non-profit organization called Mutts and Moms. After the dog was taken by the organization for this violation, Ellen went on her show, sobbed in great dramatic form and begged for the return of her precious pooch (of course, not to her, but to her hairdresser). The organization would not relent on their decision, however, saying that they didn’t want to give her special treatment just because she is a celebrity. Well, apparently Ellen has some fans that aren’t about to put up with that mess; Mutts and Moms has been receiving numerous threats to their lives and property, as well as threats of a boycott, ever since Ellen’s on-air plea. What is wrong with people? Who the fuck cares about some celebrity losing a dog they had already given away? Whoever you are, do the rest of us a favor, and just kill yourself, please.

It was reported last night that Randy Rhodes, the guitarist widely thought responsible for re-launching Ozzy Osbourne’s post-Black Sabbath musical career, was attacked in New York city near 39th Street and Park Avenue. In addition to his noted career as a heavy metal guitar virtuoso, Rhodes, who died in a plane crash in 1982, was an avid classical guitarist….

It was reported last night that Randi Rhodes, talk show host on progressive radio station Air America, was attacked in New York city near 39th Street and Park Avenue while walking her dog…

Damn, blog-journalism is hard. Looks like Randi Rhodes’ “attack” has been reduced to an “accident,” according to a post on Air America’s web site:

October 16-NEW YORK-On Sunday evening, October 14, Air America host Randi Rhodes experienced an unfortunate incident hindering her from hosting her show. The reports of a presumed hate crime are unfounded. Ms. Rhodes looks forward to being back on the air on Thursday.

On Sunday, October 14, 2007, Rhodes was walking her dog when she fell and sustained injuries that kept her off the air for several days. Air America host Jon Elliott erroneously claimed on his October 15 show that Rhodes had been the victim of a savage mugging. Elliott went on to speculate that this was not just a random event, but that it may have been politically motivated.
