Bob Dylan took home rock ‘n’ roll’s first Pulitzer Prize thanks to a special award presented to the iconic songwriter for “his profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.” Dylan, humbled by the announcement, said he was in “disbelief.”
Another Pulitzer first occurred when two awards were handed out for poetry. Philip Schultz’s Failure and Robert Hass’ Time and Materials both received honors for distinguished volumes of original verse by an American author. You can read the title poem from Schultz’s collection, as well as hear the poet read it here.
The Washington Post emerged with six Pulitzers, including “Jo Becker and Barton Gellman, who won the national reporting award for documenting the power and secrecy wielded by Vice President Dick Cheney, and to Steve Fainaru, who won the international reporting prize for his examination of private security contractors in Iraq.”

Film Independent announced Tuesday the nominees for their 2008 Spirit Awards. Best Feature nods went to France’s The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, the Bob Dylan-inspired I’m Not There, A Mighty Heart starring Angelina Jolie, Gus Van Sant’s Paranoid Park and Juno, a comedy about an unplanned pregnancy penned by first-time screenwriter Diablo Cody. I’m keeping my fingers that the latter gets a fairly wide release (wide enough to come here to cow town) because the trailers look hilarious, and Ellen Page, nominated for Best Female Lead for her work in the title role, is a real talent. Juno is due out this “holiday season” according to its official Web site and also stars Superbad’s Michael Cera (also pretty darn awesome). Cody and director Jason Reitman also took home nods for Best First Screenplay and Best Director respectively. A full list of nominees can be found here. The awards will air on AMC and IFC on Feb. 23rd, 2008.

Tis the season…well, almost. As usual, we can expect to be inundated with entertainment industry professionals looking to pretty up their tax forms with some end-of-the-year charity work, but at least it’s all for a good cause, right? Hard Rock is getting a jump on the impending holiday season with their Serve2 compilation, available for download on iTunes. The net proceeds of which will go to Artists Against Hunger and Poverty, an artist-directed special program of World Hunger Year.
Not only is it for a good cause, but the compilation is pretty solid (and at 25 tracks, pretty damn hefty), featuring previously unreleased and live cuts from old school heavyweights like Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan, but also newer and more vital acts like The Hold Steady. Even New Found Glory and Andrew W.K. managed to sneak on there. You can sample a live rendition of “Baby It’s a Fact” by Hellogoodbye (available on Serve2) here mp3 (or download it at Synthesis.net). Full track listing after the jump.

Dylan, the “Ultimate Bob Dylan Collection,” is coming out Oct. 1st on Sony’s Legacy Recordings. This will be made available in a one-disc, 18-track CD; a three-disc box set which includes postcards, a 40-page booklet and a bunch of other stuff; and a three-disc Digipak. If you care, cool, but even if you don’t, you can make your own video messages on this e-card while you’re supposed to be working. (Then you can blog about it, and if you’re like me, you technically will be working.)
