Imagine being a DJ at a very popular club and having the crowd riled up because
the joints you’re spinning are off the hook… It’s 80s stuff that the people dig… Aerosmith, English Beat, AC/DC, GoGos, Wire… and then, noticing the crowd is going nuts for Dexy’s Midnight Runner’s "Come On, Eileen", you decide that a great segue would be Wham’s "Wake Me Up Before You GoGo". You put the needle the record, cue it up, and get ready to pitch blend the song… And you hit, GO…

Then POW! You get decked because the music you’re playing is too "gay".

It’s a pretty funny scenario, and as a DJ at indie rock/punk clubs in the NYC area… it’s not something that’s ever happened to me, thank God. If I notice the crowd is really digging Scissor Sister’s "Tits on the Radio", chances are I’m not gonna throw on Communards or Donna Summer, not because they’d be the automatic gay follow-up but because, ummm, I’m a punk/indie rock DJ (truth be told, I’d throw on Kasabian’s "L.S.F." or LoFi Allstars "Battleflag" to keep the beats but add more edge)… But if I decided to throw on Pansy Division’s "Touch My Joe Camel", I don’t expect to be pummeled or knocked out… but that scenario happened at the Moonshine Disco in Dorset, England not too long ago. A DJ got his nose broken because some 48 year-old guy took offense that "Wake Me Up…" was turning the club into a gay bar.

I guess next Wednesday when I spin at The Loop Lounge, I’ll be sure to watch my segues… and if my set starts to get a little too "gay", I’ll have some NIN’s "March of the Pigs" or House of Pain’s "Jump Around" cued up on the other turntable before I get slugged.
