  • band, house trained, needs a good home

A statement released today reads as follows:

(An announcement to our fans, friends and family.

VAUX has parted ways with Atlantic/Lava Records.

Currently we are in the midst of the (separation process with the label and are awaiting the outcome.

This includes regaining ownership of our album Beyond Virtue, Beyond Vice that was scheduled for a November 8th release date. With all that has recently happened there is no (official release date for the album, but we feel very confident that we will get the album back and be able to put it into the hands of our fans very soon. Despite all that has happened, the band is tighter than ever and feels very positive about the situation. We would like to thank everyone for their continued support and we look forward to seeing you on the road. For more information on VAUX and to hear some of the new songs visit www.vauxrock.com, www.purevolume.com/vaux, and www.myspace.com/vaux Sincerely, Ryder, Quentin, Greg, Joe, Adam, Chris

If you like to get stoned and listen to loud guitar dirges, and you live on the West Coast, you should probably get off the couch and check out Boris live. They just released an album with Japanese noise god Merzbow called Sun baked snow cave on Hydra Head, and will now be playing a few West Coast dates in support with Sunn o))) and Thrones. • Halloweenie

If you may recall, Chico made national news a few years back when the city cancelled Halloween. Now, a group known as the North American Halloween Prevention Initiative (NAHPI - you’d think that they could come up with a better acronym…) are doing their best to end the scourge of Halloween across the nation.

Led by Nicholas Diamonds (ex-Unicorns) and Adam Gollner (Dessert, writer for the New York Times), NAHPI has released “Do They Know It’s Halloween?”

Check out the song at Vice Records, or check out the video.

Actually, this parody of Bob Geldof’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” both serves to raise money for UNICEF and put the spotlight on the kind of ethnocentrism that happens when Western countries, often led by musicians, attempt to alleviate the sufferings of third world nations.

Personally, I can see where they're coming from, and because Live 8 didn't include any African musicians on any of the larger stages, it could be perceived as saying Africans have little to offer in terms of taking care of themselves. Still, you can't discount the positive effects of benefits like Live Aid or Live 8, even if there are some negative connotations in how they go about it…
Here's a list of who's involved in the song:

    Vocalists:
    Buck 65
    David Cross
    Devendra Banhart
    Dessert’s Liane Balaban
    Elvira, Mistress of the Dark
    Feist

    Les Savy Fav’s Syd Butler

    Smoosh’s Asya & Chloe
    Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore
    Sparks’ Russell Mael
    Subtitle
    Sum 41’s Stevo
    Tagaq
    That Dog’s Anna Waronker
