I can kinda feel The Meltdowns on several levels. The first track that came up, “Tonight We Dine,” reminds me of what Michael Jackson would put out if he were raised on the Papa Roach cover of his own “Smooth Criminal,” but then decided about a year and a half later that he was “too indie” for Papa Roach anymore, sold off his Ibanez 7-string and downloaded every Gang of Four track he could find on SoulSeek. Unfortunately, he still ended up with a shipwrecked career all because he fondled a little boy’s penis. But now he writes frenetic, dancy-y, house party, dancing on the countertops punk and gets MAD GASH and free PBRs everywhere he goes. That’s just reason #1.

Also, I would like to point out that by swapping letters in the band name “Gang of Four,” you get “Fang of Gore”; and when you type “Fang of Gore” into a google image search, you get this:

That’s just reason #2 why you should click on The Meltdowns’ MySpace Page, befriend them, and then let them crash at your house when they’re on tour.

The Meltdowns’ debut EP, “No Authority, Direction, or Control” was released in January and should be purchased HERE. It sounds like demon dance party dogs tearing through a sweaty basement club and nipping at the heels of rad chicks with ugly-ass haircuts.

Don’t worry: Unlike both the real and the alternate reality Michael Jacksons, The MELTDOWNS WILL NOT TOUCH YOUR PENIS. (maybe.)

The Meltdowns have East Coast shows coming up. You can find them after the jump.

I’m A Big Kid Now

What does Amy Winehouse do to ensure she doesn’t humiliate herself? She wears diapers. Yep, Lord forbid someone get a snapshot of her wetting her pants or something. Much better to save yourself the embarrassment and put on some pull-ups. Then give the paparazzi a good eyeful. Winner.

Hiero Jeans

The Bay Area’s own Hieroglyphics are known as being underground hip-hop legends but are now being recognized for more than just their music: fashion. Hieroglyphics designer, Casual, has had positive responses from consumers on the high quality designer jeans for men. All jean styles are limited edition vintage washes. Some styles include organic jeans and black jean material for more formal events. I especially like the personalized touches - which include lyrics printed on the inside of the jeans and their “face” logo engraved on the button closures. Also available are destroyed vintage t-shirts, long and short sleeved. Boys, make sure you get a proper fit before you hit the town. The ladies will appreciate your style. Who would’ve thought Hiero would be recognized in the fashion world? Here is the cream of the crop.

Helping Me Help Myself
By Beth Lisick
William Morrow

So graduation is upon us. My main advice to graduates would be to rethink the whole idea and stay in college forever, but it’s probably too late for most of you so you’ll have to go ahead and graduate. Too bad.
Many of you probably think graduation will be the start of your “real life.” You know, the one where you get a job, stop spending so much of your money on beer and start to become your parents. But with the economy the way it is, don’t count on it. In fact, you might end up like Beth Lisick, who makes a substantial chunk of her income from donning a banana suit and passing out fruit to passersby. It is at this point that you, like Lisick, may decide that you need a bit of help — self-help to be exact.

Helping Me Help Myself is the memoir of a year spent devoted to living the advice contained in self-help books. Every month she picks a different facet of her life that could be improved and sets about improving it. Lisick tries all the greats: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People; Men are From Mars, Women are From Venus; The Artist’s Way; Suze Orman and even Richard Simmons. As you might suspect she comes at this task from a highly cynical point of view. Lisick is a slam poet/author/banana suit wearer living in Berkeley — not you your typical self-helper. But as cynical as she is, she’s also fair and does her best to quell her gag reflex in order to let the self-help really sink in. And along the way the reader can’t help but pick up some good tips, too.
The book is very funny, which is pretty much my only criteria for a good review, and you do come away with a sense that Lisick learned something in her quest. But I couldn’t help feeling disappointed that by December no major revelation had been reached. The only things that seem to change in her life are smaller, practical things, and the big questions she starts out with are never satisfactorily answered. Perhaps that’s to be expected when you devote your intellectual activity to books you can purchase at the grocery store, but I still felt unsatisfied when it was over. Thankfully though, Lisick’s personality and sense of humor make the memoir still worth the cover price and the few days it took to read.

More after the jump. (more…)

  • Apple recently introduced a new idea for a solar film to cover iPods. A patent is pending on this new “green” idea and would include the entire iPod to be covered in solar cells. This will be more compact and within budget than the current solar iPods available. The devices on the market at the moment require a fairly large charger that requires a lot of sun exposure. To make things more convenient, Apple wants the solar cells to eliminate the need for the large charger to consistently be in the sun for long periods of time. Having solar cells built in to your iPod is in the near future. For now, if you’re going to be doing plenty of sun worshipping this summer - grab yourself a solar iPod for a new tanning buddy.
