Didn’t you hear? Last week an Illinois Christian priest was derided and reprimanded by a state representative in front of the House State Government Administration Committee for spreading a philosophy that’s dangerous to children.

Oh wait, I’m sorry. It wasn’t a priest. It was an atheist who objected the government dishing out 1 million dollars to a Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicago, and he was met with the following response from Rep. Monique Davis (D).

Davis: I’m trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.… What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, it’s dangerous–

Sherman: What’s dangerous, ma’am?

Davis: It’s dangerous to the progression of this state. And it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! Now you will go to court to fight kids to have the opportunity to be quiet for a minute. But damn if you’ll go to [court] to fight for them to keep guns out of their hands. I am fed up! Get out of that seat!

Sherman: Thank you for sharing your perspective with me, and I’m sure that if t his matter does go to court—

Davis: You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon.

So according to Sherman, being an atheist means you have no right to participate in the political process, no right to voice you opinions or objections to how your tax dollars are being spent. Isn’t there a little something called the Bill of Rights? I’m sorry Miss Sherman, but freedom of religion applies to all beliefs. Trying to expel Mr. Davis from your committee because he’s an atheist, is no different than if you were to do the same thing because he were Christian. Such flagrant prejudice by a public official should not be tolerated.

Vindication was delivered a few days ago when Keith Olbermann tagged Davis as his “Worst Person in the World” for April 8th. Check out the video below:

In the end, Davis apologized to Sherman, and Sherman graciously accepted. Can you believe it? An amoral atheist accepted an apology? OMG. Atheists can be morally upright? They’re not the gun-toting spawn of Satan? Who knew? Davis claims she was just having a bad day after hearing about a shooting at a Chicago Public School, which I can understand. Just read this latest story about a highway shooting in San Francisco. It’s frustrating, saddening and angering, but public office demands decorum and professionalism that necessitates preventing one’s own emotional stresses from clouding balanced judgment. It’s not as if you can go around saying things like,

“You’re a child-murdering, plague upon the planet, get the hell out of my sight! Oh I’m sorry I was just having a bad day. We’re good right?”

Personally, I think Davis should still resign. Her actions clearly show that she cannot equally represent her constituency. She has a plain and distinct bias towards those who don’t pander towards her religious beliefs.
