After watching the video of this Marine throwing a defenseless puppy off a cliff, my first reaction is a feeling of horror and indescribable anger.. However, this a**holes family doesn’t deserve to be hassled for their disturbed adult child (unless they brought him up to kill puppies.) Considering that no one here knows whether or not his family raised him “right” or otherwise, I believe the anger should be centered on him and his buddy who laughed at such a horrible act.
Do I believe this Marine should be thrown off a cliff or otherwise put to death in a manner such as his prey? NO. Although. if he accidently fell off a cliff, I would not shed a tear. Does he deserve to be dishonorably discharged, striped of his benefits and humiliated publicly? Absolutely.

Everytime I think of that poor defenseless little puppy being flung into the air & yelping just moments before it plunges to its death, I can’t help but shed a tear. At first, I kept hoping it was one of the countless fake videos being made to shock people, but the moment I saw it I knew that it wasn’t. That little baby didn’t look more than a month or two old… and it died such a horrible & frightening death. If that dog somehow miraculously survived… I would bring it home & take care of it the way it deserves to be cared for. The wonderful things about dogs, and most animals, is that they are so forgiving. It takes them a while to be able to trust humans again after being abused by one, but if you work hard to gain their trust, then you will get it… after that, they will stay loyal to you no matter what. I have seen this video several times and the puppy looks real and alive to me. Contrary to popular belief puppies do not kick and wiggle when picked up by the scruff/nape of the neck. Obviously many people have never picked up a pup this way or witnessed a mother carry a puppy. I was a dog breeder for a long time, puppies go limp and they get quiet, the puppy, in my opinion was real.
The Marines can say they are investigating the authenticity of the video but at this point I do not care. I saw the video enough times to tell me what I needed to know. They cover for their own anyway and if this poor example of humanity thought perpetrating this type of crime on an animal was amusing, this is aberrant behavior. My first reaction is very similar to the ones posted…anger, hatrid for those guys (including the camera person), and it made me sick to see the helpless pup getting the treatment. But after a few days of calming, I realized that we should try to tone down our reactions. War and death is believed necessary in order to bring long term benefit, it is engaged because there are logical, rational, social and economic reasons. This has no reason, no moral, no benefit. This soldier is an example of why americans hold an unfortunate reputation and should be the reason why wars should not be started if you are ill prepared.

With 100% respect for our Marines, I can understand that dogs need to be killed or risk giving away your position in times of battle. I have seen it happen, and human lives lost when a dog perked up and ran over to our platoon. Then the bullets came flying……
However, the whimsical manner and callousness in which this deed is carried out is not acceptable. There is a degree of honor and class when it comes to actions on the battlefield, and this is certainly not representative of the many Marines who came before this young man. Even his reaction at the end of the video, the shoulder shrug, suggests that even he doesn’t know why he just threw that puppy. A puppy would not be a threat to a platoon in my opinion, and this act seemed a total act of boredom and lack of judgement for the camera.
If the camera hadn’t been there, or there were not friends to impress, the dog would not have been tossed off of the cliff.
Do I feel that a dog’s life is worth more than a humans? Sadly, no, I would not sacrifice a human for a dog. But this was a situation where a sacrifice of life was not necessary. It was murder for fun, and that is unacceptable. I am truly happy that David was released from the Marines. The honor of the Marines cannot include this madness in their ranks.
