So I posted last week about the Sacramento Kings cheerleaders and their harmless camera fun. Now a bunch of silly shots of the Washington Wizards dance team surface. Turns out lots of people like to look at pictures of scantily clad women that dance for a living. Who knew?
But now I’m wondering, what’s the story with cheerleaders? What is their actual purpose? Sure I love them as much as the next guy, but what’s it all for? They stroll out, do a little dance, get ogled, mocked, and pristinely strut off the field or court, hands waiving and heads held high. Isn’t this strange? Do they mind being viewed as meat market sex objects? Aside from teenage girls who admire their dancing talent, cheerleaders are strictly on display for brainless sex appeal. And damn if it doesn’t work.
Example: You’re at a 49er game (or whatever team), and the Gold Rush Girls saunter by with one hand on hip and the other waiving a glitzy gold pompom. Without fail, some average drunk will stand up with beer in hand and wave back with a smile the size of Texas, all the while hollering catcalls. Is this wrong? Hard to say. Pigheaded and macho, yes, but it is encouraged, and the women themselves seem to love it. What else is to be expected? You can’t honestly hope for the average male fan to be interested in their choreographed spirit, can you?
Along the same lines, watch this video for a laugh. No real harm done.
