Sam Mellon and the Skylarks

I’m not sure how I feel about Sam Mellon and the Skylarks. They’re pleasant. I guess that’s the best way to put it. Their music has a sharp country twang, but not with the usual dirt-under-the-fingernails grittiness I usually look for in my folk/rock/Americana. They’re just so damn sunny, which I guess might stem from their Southern California roots. Still, I’ll probably find myself humming their “Just Like Thieves” to myself this week more times than I’ll like to admit (the ending of which reminds me a bit of a They Might Be Giants song, which is always a good thing). Their self-titled debut album was recorded with Bart Thurber (who’s worked with just about the most eclectic range of artists you can imagine) in his Palo Alto, CA, House of Faith recording studio. Their self-titled debut was released back in 2005, but the band plans to put a new collection of songs together later this year. Check them out for yourself here.
