For those of you who really care about such things, The Grammy Award Nominations were announced today. The ceremony will occur on February 10th in LA. Here’s the brief, bold faced rundown (with snarky commentary where needed).
Best New Artist (aka Kiss of Death Award): Amy Winehouse, Ledesi, Feist, Paramore & Taylor Swift . (Taylor Swift being the only artist in this well-named category to actually have released her debut album within the last two years).
[Wait.....OMG PARAMORE!? I think somebody at Synthesis really likes that band.]
Record of the Year: Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab”, Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable,” the Foo Fighters’ “The Pretender,” Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” and Justin Timberlake’s “What Goes Around Comes Around.”
Song of the year: Winehouse’s “Rehab,” Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” Plain White T’s “Hey There Delilah,” Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Like a Star,” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.”
Pop Vocal Album: Bon Jovi, “Lost Highway,” Feist, “The Reminder,” Maroon 5 “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long,” Paul McCartney “Memory Almost Full”...wait, really? Ok…. Amy Winehouse “Back to Black,”
Rock Album: Daughtry “Daughtry”; John Fogerty “Revival,” The Foo Fighters “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace,” Bruce Springsteen “Magic,” Bruce Springsteen; Wilco “Sky Blue Sky.”
R&B Album: “Funk This,” Chaka Khan (!!!); “Lost & Found,” Ledisi; “Luvanmusiq,” Musiq Soulchild; “The Real Thing,” Jill Scott; “Sex, Love & Pain,” Tank.
Rap Album: “Finding Forever,” Common; “Kingdom Come,” Jay-Z, “Hip Hop Is Dead,” Nas; “T.I. vs T.I.P.,” T.I.; “Graduation,” Kanye. (I’m secretly hoping Kanye gets shut out of this category - I want to see how much wining will occur. I also hope Jay-Z and Nas reignite their feud, just because their verbal sparring might be more interesting than their albums…)
Alternative Album (They still have a category for “alternative?” Good lord…) “Alright, Still,” Lilly Allen; “Neon Bible,” Arcade Fire; “Volta,” Bjork; “Wincing the Night Away,” the Shins; “Icky Thump,” the White Stripes.
Country Album: “Long Trip Alone,” Dierks Bentley; “These Days,” Vince Gill; “Let It Go,” Tim McGraw; “5th Gear,” Brad Paisley; “It Just Comes Natural,” George Strait.
Latin Pop Album: “Papito,” Miguel Bose & Varios Artistas; “12 Segundos De Oscuridad,” Jorge Drexler; “Navidades Luis Miguel,” Luis Miguel; “Dicen Que El Tiempo,” Jennifer Pena; “El Tren De Los Momentos,” Alejandro Sanz.
Contemporary Jazz Album: “Party Hats,” Will Bernard; “Downright Upright,” Brian Bromberg; “Re-imagination,” Eldar; “River: The Joni Letters,” Herbie Hancock; “He Had a Hat,” Jeff Lorber.
