Perry Farrell has been bringing creativity and passion to helping save the
environment for well over a decade. Frank Mauceri, SXSW co-panelist and
founder of Smog Veil Records has created a business model that can show
other labels the way to join the ‘greening of the music industry’ movement.
Here is Smog Veil Records’ green agenda:

1. new Smog Veil HQ in Chicago - green building completion:
–solar, geothermal, and wind energy sustainability;
–use of recycled materials;
–LEED certification

2. elimination of jewel case packaging in new releases:
–replace with digipaks now;
–goal is to use completely plastic-free packaging, except for shrinkwrap;
–ultimately produce gross revenues from digital distribution greater than
hard goods, thereby replacing need for high-impact packaging;

3. stepped-up recycling program:
–use of recycled materials in building and hard good packaging;
–use of recycled materials in shipping packaging;
–use of recycled materials in office setting;
–goal is to reduce non-recyclable waste by 75%

Smog Veil Records will unveil the all green, all sustainable building they
have been working on since 2006 in July of this year. The building features
a revolutionary design for a green roof with power-generating wind turbines.
In order to implement the design Mauceri had to get the City of Chicago to
pass an ordinance allowing such a structure on the roof. With the use of
sustainable construction, the building is designed with numerous
eco-friendly features. This live-work space will be the centerpiece of the
company’s efforts to be greener. “I really want to be an example of
sustainability in our business,” Mauceri recently told a Chicago Tribune
reporter (feature ran October 16, 2006). The building is designed so that
about 40 to 45 percent of the structure¹s electrical needs will be wind and
solar generated. The building may in fact end up selling electricity back
to the city’s power grid if these numbers are exceeded. The structure’s
Green Strategies include 80% recycling of demolished materials; three Wind
Turbines and 30 solar panels on roof; Geothermal Heating and Cooling;
Terrazzo floor containing recycled glass and owner supplied (Smog Veil)
vinyl albums. The building has been selected to be one of the City of
Chicago¹s Green Building Case Studies by the City of Chicago Green Permit
Program. “It is my understanding” Mauceri concludes “that once
completed,
the green live/work space housing the offices of Smog Veil Records will be
the only record label, as well as the only business, in the United States
generating its own electricity through the use of solar panels and wind
turbines, in tandem with heating and cooling the space through the use of
geothermal wells.”
