For the blogsters, this ones kinda old, but one of Mark Ecko’s designers for his high-end Mark Ecko Cut and Sew line blatantly rips off Mike Giant and some of the designs he has done for his clothing company REBEL 8. You know a designer for a multi-million dollar company probably gets paid much more than anyone reading this blog does, and he’s ripping off another designer?
Mark Ecko has done some ground breaking things in his lifetime and catches a lot of hate for how corporate his reign has become, which is totally the opposite of how he started his guerrilla art and his business. This isn’t a new problem for businesses that begin people up (as apposed to top down). A lot of companies have started with tons of street credibility, being led by a passionate leader, but their sights quickly change with how large their possibilities become. Sights are changed to see corporate dollar signs and these innovators lose the original goal that built them in the first place. This sickness has killed a lot of dope companies. I’m sure this design has been brought to his attention by now and maybe it will put him in check. Hopefully he will go back to overseeing his production a little closer.
You can read more about REBEL 8 clothing in Synthesis national magazine’s December 2005 issue.

One Response for "Ecko Rips off Mike Giant"
[...] I don’t know if its because people are finally waking up and noticing his amazing illustrations and style, but Mike Giant’s illustration has yet again been bitten. Though not from a large corporation as Synthesis’ last bitters post, this imitation is less than flattering. Apparently on Mathew McDonald’s portfolio web page, his ‘Art Director’ skills include directing where to find other people’s artwork and claim them as his own. I give it to McDonald though for his subliminal website title (as seen at the top of your browser when on his page) Chewy Lives!, which is very appropriate for the styles he chews on. Feel free to hit up Mathew McDonald via email, mcdonaldmc@gmail.com or phone, 804.543.2484 or you can hit up the real artists through his clothing line, REBEL 8. [...]
